Trimble & wolves.
When Larry Trimble was shooting the early "Strongheart" films in Canada's west, he had trapppers round up wolves which he kept in a compound. He actually slept there with them, so they would accept him. However his youngt daughter was so like her father, in ability with all animals that they wouldn't chase her for scenes of violence. He had to starve them & put pieces of horse meat under her clothing, befo they would act. John Matthew
Calling Jordan Taylor
Dear Jordan: I'm an 84 years old Shepherd enthusiast. Just got your superb book. However there's a lot of names etc I can help you with, that you do not as yet have! For instance the actual police service Norwegian dog that acted with Charlton Heston in "Call of the Wild' was Faiko, now sadly gone. I corresponded with his master for several years. Met Larry Trimble's daughter (Jan Zilliacus, now gone), met the widow of Glenn Gano, Trimble's main cinematographer on all the early Strongheart film shot out western Canada. Both ladies told me much about Trimble & the films. Knew Chuck Eisenmann & 5 of his Hobos for several years, before he commenced the color tv run at CFTO here in Toronto. Have a good lot of memorabilia on these dogs. Including Warner's Rinty scripts. BFI in London supplied some great stills. Have some of these old movies on video, & a few of the newer ones. When Trimble & his daughter lived in the Thousand Islands here during the depression, they left behind memorabilia now in the Film Archives in Ottawa. I saw one contract for a Strongheart film that is probably still there. Yesterday on "Google" solved the mystery of Trimble's 3 marriages! Not sure why the Jane Murfin "marriage' (if that's what it was?) broke up so acrimoniously. T was forbidden to ever see poor Strongheart again. But saw him left in a parked car one day & had a nervous breakdown afterwards, when of course the dog had been killed due to neglect & an accidental burn from a fallen studio lamp. The dog went crazy to see his old friend that one last meeting! Please contact me or let me have a postal snail-mail address. Since I can send you a very lengthy letter. Much to find in my apt & check out. Thank you sincerely for a truly wonderful book! Am again in contact with Dan Condon, who has an immense collection & 5 page website of all these movie shepherds. He will be getting your book of course, since I brought it to his attention. Wish you had listed all Stronghearts' movies. They are listed in detail in 1920's reference books on US films I have. (the series I believe went under after only a few volumes came out?) Dan claims the French Archives DO have another of his long lost films! Sncerely John L.
